Behind the Scenes: Creating Viral Content for the Detroit Lions

A few weeks ago, I had a conversation that stuck with me. A friend asked how business was going, and as we talked, I admitted something a lot of content creators face:

“I don’t have time to create for myself anymore.”

He didn’t lecture me. He didn’t offer a solution. He just asked one simple question:

“Why?”

That single word sat with me all weekend.

Then, on Sunday night, I found myself watching the Detroit Lions take on the Vikings. Jahmyr Gibbs made a ridiculous juke, leaving a defender in the dust before sprinting into the end zone.

At that exact moment, I knew what I needed to do.

At this point, the nickname “Sonic & Knuckles” for Gibbs and Montgomery was already gaining traction. The connection to the legendary Sega duo was perfect—and for me, it was personal. The Sega Genesis was the first video game system I ever owned, and Sonic was my first video game. Seeing that moment on the field felt like a full-circle moment, blending my childhood nostalgia with my passion for the Detroit Lions.

But then came the excuses:

😴 “I’m tired.”

📅 “It’s Sunday night.”

📈 “I have a big week ahead of me.”

All the usual reasons to put it off. But then I remembered my friend’s question:

“Why?”

That one word shifted everything. I wasn’t making this for a paycheck. I wasn’t making it for a client. I was making it because I love bringing ideas to life. That’s why I got into video production in the first place.

So, I pushed the doubts aside, fired up my computer, and got to work.

The video came together fast. It was one of those edits where everything just clicked—the timing, the sound effects, the graphics. Within hours of posting, it exploded.

🔥 Barstool Sports shared it.

🔥 Sonic the Movie’s official account shared it.

🔥 And then…the Detroit Lions posted it themselves.

Not only did they share it, but they tagged me. A career milestone unlocked.

The crazy part? If I had let my excuses win that night, this moment never would have happened.

After the first video’s success, the Lions reached out. They wanted more. I went on to create two more videos for them, culminating in a full-season edit that captured the video game highlight reel of the duo’s incredible year.

Each project built upon the last, and by the end of it, I wasn’t just an outside creator making viral content—I was a trusted video editor for the team I grew up watching.

This entire journey—from that Sunday night edit to working directly with the Detroit Lions—reinforced one of the biggest lessons in creativity and business:

📌 Sometimes, the difference between success and missed opportunity is simply showing up.

📌 Creating for yourself is just as important as creating for others.

📌 Your “why” matters more than any excuse.

So, if you’re ever debating whether to put in the effort, whether to follow that creative spark, just do it. You never know who’s watching.

The next time you feel too tired, too busy, or too unsure to chase that idea, ask yourself the same question I did:

“Why?”

The answer might just change everything.
